The Far Infrared and Submillimeter

چکیده

We have repeated our earlier observations of the Infrared and submllllmeter background radiation. While the measured values of the infrared background radiation remain unchanged, we have failed to observe the high flux previously reported for the 0.4 to 1.3 mm range. This indicates that the flux cannot have been galactic or cosmic, but further observations are needed to rule out a solar cycle dependent geocoronal origin.

Far-Infrared and Submillimeter Observations of High Redshift Galaxies

Observations at far-infrared and submillimeter wavelengths promise to revolutionize the study of high redshift galaxies and AGN by providing a unique probe of the conditions within heavily extinguished regions of star formation and nuclear activity. Observational capabilities in this spectral region will expand greatly in the next decade as new observatories are developed both in space and on t...

The Infrared Spectral Energy Distribution of Normal Star-Forming Galaxies: Calibration at Far-Infrared and Submillimeter Wavelengths

New far-infrared and submillimeter data are used to solidify and to extend to long wavelengths the empirical calibration of the infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) of normal star-forming galaxies. As was found by Dale et al. (2001), a single parameter family, characterized by fν(60μm) fν(100μm) , is adequate to describe the range of normal galaxy spectral energy distributions observed b...

Polarized Far-infrared and Submillimeter Emission from Interstellar Dust

Polarized far-infrared and submillimeter emission is calculated for models of nonspherical dust grains that are constrained to reproduce the observed wavelength-dependent extinction and polarization of starlight. For emission from regions where the magnetic field is perpendicular to the line-of-sight, the far-infrared emission is expected to have substantial linear polarization at wavelengths λ...

Improved Data Reduction for Far-Infrared/Submillimeter Polarimetry

Fluctuations in atmospheric emission introduce noise and systematic errors into measurements of polarization at far-infrared and submillimeter wavelengths. We describe a new analysis method that corrects for the bias and reduces the errors caused by the fluctuations. The method exploits repeated observations of a source and is especially effective on faint sources for which the polarized flux i...

μ m Observations of Local Luminous Infrared Galaxies and the Temperature Dependence of the Emissivity Index

We report 350 µm observations of 18 nearby luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), using the Submillimeter High Angular Resolution Camera II (SHARC-II) mounted on the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) 10.4 m telescope. Combining our 350 µm flux measurements with the existing far-infrared (far-IR) and submillimeter (submm) data, we fit a single-temperature model to the spectral energy distribu...

350μm Observations of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies at Intermediate Redshifts

We present 350μm observations of 36 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at intermediate redshifts (0.089 ≤ z ≤ 0.926) using the Submillimeter High Angular Resolution Camera II (SHARC-II) on the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO). In total, 28 sources are detected at S/N ≥ 3, providing the first flux measurements longward of 100μm for a statistically significant sample of ULIRGs in the...
